Our spring 2027 programme moves through ruins, memories, traditions, and shifting identities. The self is multiplied, cultural heritage is recycled, social structures begin to crack, and the stage is rebuilt from the ruins again and again.
At & Espoo Theatre, we believe in the power of collaboration. This spring, seven of our productions are international co-productions, created together with partners across borders.
“We have long dreamed of genuine collaboration between Finnish and international artists and theatres. Now it is finally happening! The boundary between international and domestic productions is truly beginning to fade, as some of the most exciting Finnish theatre-makers of the younger generation have the opportunity to present their work to European audiences this spring. At the same time, through our own co-productions, we are bringing outstanding international artists and productions to Espoo,” says our Artistic Director Jussi Sorjanen.
SPRING 2027 Programme
The legendary Gob Squad brings its new work Doppelgänger to our &Louhi stage, inviting audiences into a hall of mirrors of identity. The production premiered at Wiener Festwochen, one of Europe’s most prestigious festivals, and asks where the self ends and someone else begins. We are a co-producer of the work, and our dramaturge Pauli Patinen is part of the creative team.
One of the most exciting theatre-makers of her generation, Minna Lund directs Suburban Angels (Esikaupungin enkelit), written by Martta Mercedes Jylhä. We are producing the work together with Oulu Theatre and Dailes Theatre, one of the most respected theatres in the Baltic region. Exploring bimbo culture and Western consumer society, the production premieres in Riga in February before arriving in Tapiola in March.
Following the intimate and critically acclaimed YES DADDY, an exploration of power dynamics, Khashabi Theatre returns to Finland with its new large-scale production Al Sirah Al-Hilaliyah (The Bani Hilal Epic). Reinterpreting a fading tradition of Arabic oral epic storytelling, the work combines Palestinian folklore with physical theatre, live music, puppetry, and dance. We are proud to be a co-producer of this internationally touring production.
In Någonting, a circus performance created by French artists Camille Boitel and Sève Bernard, performers contend with both gravity and an ever-changing stage. Premiering in Denmark, this wordless production moves between humour, suspense, and melancholy, blurring the line between order and chaos. We are co-producing the work with Riksteatern and Vendsyssel Teater, in partnership with Cirko – Centre for New Circus.
Our programme also features Jättömailla, a new work by Vauriomania that turns its gaze towards the fault lines of the Finnish welfare state. This dark hymn to the welfare state combines puppetry for adults with Vauriomania’s characteristic grotesque theatrical language. During the spring, we will also take the production to community venues across Espoo, with performances free of charge.
The season also sees the return of Saara Turunen’s hugely popular Room Trilogy: The Phantom of Normality (Tavallisuuden aave), Medusa’s Room (Medusan huone), and The Fruits of Reason (Järjen hedelmät).
