There’s no use in trying to explain what in this odd performance makes one laugh, but one thing is certain: it does make one laugh, at the same time as stealthily tackling Tolstoy’s big themes: an individual’s place in society, the corrosion of general morality, and technical and political developments, which are topics that are still astonishingly pertinent to today’s relationship between Russia and the Western Europe. This work premiered just weeks before Russia started its war against Ukraine. Now, the creators hope the performance can be a contribution to the difficult and important conversations about our relationship with Russian culture.
