Thought-provoking discussions, art works, and virtual reality
Centriphery project’s programme of supplementary events is here, and it’s all free! Welcome!
Espoo City Theatre collaborates with eight other European arts and culture organisations on a cross-disciplinary Centriphery project. The project brings together artists and local communities in decentralised and peripheral regions of Europe. The project consists of artistic residences, art workshops for local communities, art works, and performances. This multi-year project culminates in May at the theatre.

LIVE-PODCAST: WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH THEATRE?
Sat May 14, starting at around 4pm
What’s the matter with theatre? is a discussion about what theatre looks like and feels like in 2022. Writers Veikka Lahtinen and Pontus Purokuru were tasked by Espoo City Theatre to watch every theatre performance this spring. Now, it’s time for their verdict. Has theatre got stuck in the past? What has theatre got to offer to societal analysis?
Lahtinen and Purokuru are the creators of cultural criticism podcast Mikä meitä vaivaa? and the two have co-authored several books. Their latest, Mikä liberalismia vaivaa?, analyses the union of capitalism and liberal governance and the related crises.
Free entry, discussion in Finnish.
Future narratives: How can art help us recreate stories of the future
Thursday 19th of May 2 – 4.30 pm
Keynote presentation by Roope Mokka and panel discussion with experts, hosted by Sean Ricks.
Art is often considered a reflection of society. Yet history has also proven that art is a force in transforming the world, providing narratives that help us imagine what lies ahead. The era we are living in is full of rapid changes, some of which are posing huge challenges to our future. However, do previous narratives of the future always keep up with the changing world? Do they help us solve the challenges we are facing today or tomorrow? In this panel we explore what kind of new and different stories about the future we need, and which role art can play in actively recreating the stories of our future.
Free entry, discussion in English. Register by 16th of May
The event will be livestreamed. You will receive an event link after pre-registering.
KARVONEN: NIELU, 12–19 of May
Ami Karvonen created Nielu as a part of the Centriphery project. The process took Karvonen to Delnice, a small town in Croatia, for three weeks. The work was inspired by a visit to Lokvarka cave in a neighbouring village.
Nielu is a narrative audio piece reconstructing a trek into a mysterious cave system that transforms into a journey of gradually liberating desire. The work is an exercise in increasing proximity. Themes of meeting, affecting, touching, and sensing are explored in multiple variations.
The audio sounds are, for the most part, gentle and they are intended for enjoyment. The work may not, however, be best suited for persons sensitive to bodily sounds. The work includes fantasies about proximity, touch, nestedness, and intermingling.
Text and performance Ami Karvonen, sound design Tatu Nenonen
The work is accessed privately via headphones, running time: 20 minutes.
No pre-registration, free entry.
Available Tue – Fri 11-5pm and for an hour before and after performances of BIASED.
