Neljän päivän läheisyys – Sky Every Day
Pipsa Lonka’s Neljän päivän läheisyys (Sky Every Day) examines the co-existence of humans and seagulls at a seaside holiday resort over four days.
In the play, species-typical human behaviour include swarming on a sunny southern beach, killing time in the solitude of a hotel room, and emanating a constant murmur on a beachside restaurant terrace. The beach is not a nostalgic haven of leisure and pleasure, but where the sea, that murky mass, disposes of a mound of dead fish. From their various vantage points, seagulls observe ruddy complexioned people going about their business.
Show moreHere, the protagonists are not exclusively human, but human perspectives sits side-by-side with gull ones. A central theme of the performance is mortality that connects all creatures.
Neljän päivän läheisyys explores, by zooming in and out, the overlapping of nature and culture. Tragicomic and audio-visually integrated, the narrative is carried forward by means of documentary video imagery, space, light, sound, and music. The performance is divided into four sections, each bookended by a section of Kaija Saariaho’s Cloud Trio (2009), performed here by chamber orchestra Avanti.
Premiere 13th of September, 2023 in Revontuli Hall.
