Same Words, Another Tune by Estonian Drama Theatre is a fiery confrontation of freedom and the myth of how Estonians sang themselves free.
Most Estonians like the story about how they sang themselves free. Far fewer like to talk about how, immediately before the restoration of the country’s independence, sharp disagreements existed among the decisionmakers and the public, and that consensus seemed impossible. And yet, a general agreement was reached. Estonians built up their state and, regardless of whether it ended up being exactly the one that was wanted or not, the people wanted one, and here it is.
Show moreThe performance is based on interviews with women who helped restore Estonia’s independence. The production explores the myth that finally, amid a fiery confrontation, it was these few women who were able to preserve the peace, and the common ground necessary for declaring independence was found. Harking back to a time when many Estonians were ready to die for ‘freedom’, the performance examines what that means to Estonians today. When we talk about freedom or the lack thereof, what are we really talking about? Is shared understanding even possible when people sing same words in different tunes?
The performance is part of Estonian Theatre week repertoire. In co-operation with Estonian embassy in Helsinki and Eesti Instituut.
