About
What others are saying
”Milla Kuikka in the lead works wisely as she skillfully calibrates emotional states. Her Anna Liisa is not content to wallow in guilt, but in confessing she grows into a pioneer. A woman keenly aware of her regret, but full of fight. Minna Canth would have been proud of her. She would have been proud of the actor, and the entire production."Rolf Bamberg / Demokraatti
”Mikkelsson is extremely faithful to the original text, but the ways in which she refines, emphasises, and accents different themes through Maija Viipuri's choreography and Veera Kopsala's bas reliefs, depict female existence at various stages of life cycle quite uniquely.” Seppo Turunen / Riippumaton tuumailija
★★★★ ”A hardcore, yet visually beautiful, prologue paves way to realisation that Canth shouldn't have been sidelined for 50 years at the city theatre. Director Anni Mikkelson surprised with her ideosyncratic voice in previous productions, and here, she does it again.” Katja Mabrouk / Kainuun Sanomat

Anni Mikkelsson
For Anni Mikkelsson, Minna Canth's Anna Liisa is among key plays of all time and has been ever since she first saw director Sirkku Peltola's version in 2000. Mikkelson already worked with the material in a radio play Ei kenenkään astia (YLE 2021), which she authored and directed. In the radio production, the play Anna Liisa connects three female bodies in three different eras.
"The play raises questions about female bodies, bodily self-determination, and shame; issues that are just as painful and current now as they were a century ago" says Mikkelson.
Anna Liisa is the first production Mikkelsson has directed as the Director of Kajaanin kaupunginteatteri. The production featured on Tampere Theatre Festival in 2024.
