Autumn programme to feature the very finest of international performances and Finnish drama
The Espoo City Theatre will open its autumn season with a guest performance by Tampereen Teatteri. Antti Mikkola’s adaptation of Maria Jotuni’s Huojuva talo (Tottering House), has been praised by audiences and critics alike. In this portrayal of a violent marriage, featuring Anna-Maija Tuokko and Arttu Ratinen as leading actors, traditional gender roles are turned inside out. From 12th to 15th September the play will be shown in Espoo four times.
The Song of the Goat Theatre (Teatr Pieśń Kozła) from Poland will stage its astonishing Songs of Lear at Tapiolasali on 26th and 27th October. By masterfully combining poetry, physical theatre and powerful choral singing, the piece turns Shakespeare’s tragedy into an emotionally moving work. The performance, directed by Grzegorz Bral, won three high profile awards at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The company’s international team of artists includes also the Finnish actress Anu Almagro.
All the Sex I’ve Ever Had, a coproduction of the Baltic Circle Festival and the Espoo City Theatre, puts the spotlight on ordinary Finnish senior citizens. The Canadian company Mammalian Diving Reflex is touring the world with this participatory communal project. The result is a hilarious performance in which the over 65-year-old performers tell all about their sex- and love lives. Shows from 15th November to 17th November.
Merkkipäivä, a play written by Taija Helminen, is a coproduction of Teatteri 2.0 and the Lahti City Theatre. Its premiere during the autumn season 2017 in Lahti was critically acclaimed. This year, from 28th November to 1st December, there will be four shows in Espoo. Through the fate of one family the drama examines the decay of the Finnish welfare state. The play is based on the story of Taisto Reimaluoto’s father, who is played by Reimaluoto himself. Petriikka Pohjanheimo and Aleksi Lavaste will be acting in supporting roles.
Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska, the power couple of the world-famous Nature Theater of Oklahoma, are known to transform the performing arts and to transcend the boundaries of genre. Their piece, Pursuit of Happiness, created for the Slovenian dance company EnKnapGroup, is a wild combination of violent western, political pamphlet and Hollywood parody. From 12th to 14th December this world-class performance will be shown three times at Louhisali.
The programme will be updated for additional guest performances during May 2018.
The Espoo City Theatre’s own production is represented by Juha Jokela’s long-awaited novelty Esitystalous 3 – Radio, which will complete the Esitystalous trilogy. The play will premiere on 19th September 2018 at Revontulihalli.
